This policy explains what cookies we use on this website, what each one does, how long it stays on your device, and how to turn them off. It sits alongside our Privacy Notice.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store on your device. When you come back, the browser sends it to the site again. Cookies let a site remember things such as whether you have already dismissed a banner, or help the owner understand which pages are being read.
Cookies are either session cookies, which are deleted when you close your browser, or persistent cookies, which stay until they expire or you delete them. Some are set by us, and some are set by other companies whose services appear on our pages. Similar technologies such as pixels and local storage do much the same job, and we treat them the same way in this policy.
2. Your choice
Cookies that are strictly necessary for this website to work are always set, because the site cannot function without them. Advertising cookies are only set after you have agreed to them. When you first arrive you will see a banner that lets you accept or reject them. Rejecting is as easy as accepting, and if you do nothing, none are set.
You can change your mind at any time using the Cookie settings link at the foot of every page, which reopens the banner with your current choice shown. You can also clear cookies in your browser as described in section 7. Blocking cookies will not stop you reading this site, though some features may behave differently.
The banner is our own, built into this website rather than bought in from a third party, so using it does not involve sharing anything about you with another company.
3. The categories we use
There are only two, because we only ask about things we actually do.
- Strictly necessary. Needed for the site to load, stay secure, and remember your cookie choice. These do not require consent, and there is no switch for them, because turning them off would break the site.
- Advertising. Used to measure our adverts and to show them to you on other websites. Set only with your consent, and never before.
You will not find an analytics category here, and that is deliberate. We count visits using our own software on our own server in the United Kingdom, and it sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. There is nothing for you to consent to, so it would be dishonest to put a switch in front of you and imply there was. More on that in section 5.

We currently advertise with Google Ads and use the Meta pixel, so the advertising cookies above can be set, but only if you have accepted advertising.
When we do run a campaign, those cookies are only set if you have accepted advertising. If you reject, or simply never answer, the Meta and Google Ads code is not loaded at all, so the cookies never exist on your device.
5. How we count visits, without cookies
We want to know which pages are read and which ones people leave from, because that is how the site gets better. We do that with our own analytics software, running on our own server in the United Kingdom. We do not use Google Analytics.
It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, does not follow you to other websites, and does not build a profile of you. Because it puts nothing on your device, the cookie rules do not require us to ask your permission for it, which is why there is no analytics switch on the banner.
It does record the sort of thing every web server records: the page requested, the time, roughly where in the country the request came from, and which site or search sent you. We use that only to understand how the site is performing, and we do not share it with anyone.
6. Services provided by other companies
When we run advertising, we do it through Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google Ads, and their code is what sets the advertising cookies listed above, once you have agreed to them. Their own privacy information is at facebook.com/privacy/policy and policies.google.com/privacy.
Our AI assistant is our own. It is not a bolted-on chat widget from another company, so no third party gets a cookie on your device when you use it and nobody is watching the conversation to sell you something. Your question is sent to our own server, which uses AI services from Anthropic and Voyage AI purely to work out an answer from the content of this website. Nothing about the conversation is stored on your device, and we do not use it to advertise to you.
We use Google reCAPTCHA on pages with a form, to keep spam out. It is what sets the _GRECAPTCHA cookie above.
We do not allow other companies to advertise on this website, and we do not sell your data.
7. Managing cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you see the cookies stored on your device, delete them, and block new ones. The instructions differ by browser and change from version to version, so the current guidance from each maker is linked below.
If you block every cookie, many websites will not work properly. Blocking only third-party cookies is usually enough to stop cross-site tracking without breaking things.

8. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when the cookies on the site change. The version published here is the one that applies, and the date at the top tells you when it last changed.
