Why your Google Business Profile can beat your homepage

Agents pour money and pride into their homepage. But for local searches, the thing a would-be seller sees and clicks first often isn't your homepage at all.

Agents pour money and pride into their homepage, and rightly so. But for local searches, the thing a would-be seller actually sees and clicks first often isn't your homepage at all. It's your Google Business Profile: the little panel with your name, star rating, photos and map pin that sits right at the top of the results. Underused, it's one of the biggest missed opportunities in local marketing.

Why the map pack wins the click

Search "estate agents in [your town]" and Google shows a map with three local results sitting above the ordinary links. Those three, the "map pack", take a huge share of the clicks and calls, because they carry the star rating, the reviews, and the "call" and "directions" buttons right there in front of the searcher. Your homepage is a scroll and a click away; your profile is front and centre.

It's free, and most agents half-fill it

A Google Business Profile costs nothing, and yet most are left half-complete: the wrong categories, no recent photos, no posts, reviews sitting unanswered. Every gap is a small reason for Google to favour a rival who bothered. Filling yours in properly is one of the highest-return hours you will ever spend on marketing.

What a strong profile looks like

  • The right primary category and services, set accurately
  • Real, recent photos of your team, your office and your area
  • A steady stream of reviews, with a reply to every one
  • Correct, consistent name, address, phone number and opening hours
  • The occasional post: a sale, a market update, a local event
Your homepage is where you tell people you're good. Your Google profile is where Google tells them for you.

It feeds AI too

Here's the bonus: the same clean, consistent profile that wins the map pack is exactly what AI assistants read when they decide which local agent to name. A tidy profile is quietly doing double duty, working for the old search and the new one at the same time.

Your website still matters, hugely

None of this means your homepage doesn't count; it's where you win trust and turn the click into an enquiry. The point is simply that the profile is often the first door, and it's daft to lavish attention on the second door while leaving the first one hanging off its hinges. The two work together: reviews on the profile, conversion on the site.

Give your Google Business Profile the same care you give your homepage, keep it complete, current and reviewed, and you'll catch far more of the people searching for an agent right now. It's the cheapest win in local search, and it sits at the heart of our local SEO work.
